Turning Campuses into Living Examples of Sustainability
One of the most visible examples of Care in action is Taylor’s Schools’ investment in solar energy. Taylor’s International School Kuala Lumpur and Taylor’s International School Puchong have collectively installed more than 1,600 solar panels, supporting cleaner energy use while helping students understand the value of renewable energy.
Garden International School has also joined this effort with 350 solar panels installed on the roof of its Art block. A real time digital tracker allows students to monitor energy savings, making sustainability tangible and connected to everyday learning. Through initiatives such as the Green Dragons Student Leadership programme, students are encouraged to explore the impact of solar energy and develop a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility.
At Nexus International School Singapore, solar panels also support the school’s use of clean and renewable energy, reducing its carbon footprint while reinforcing sustainability as part of campus life.
Building Student Leadership for the Planet
Care:World also comes alive through student led initiatives that place environmental action in students’ hands. At Nexus Singapore, Care for World Ambassadors champion global causes and raise awareness of issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss and food waste. One of their projects involved weighing cafeteria leftovers to help the school community better understand the impact of food waste.
The school’s Green Guardians further extend this work through gardening, organic farming, hydroponic cultivation and vermicomposting. Produce grown by students is partly used in the cafeteria, while the rest is sold to the community to raise funds for seeds and equipment. This mini circular economy gives students practical insight into sustainability, entrepreneurship and responsible consumption.
Recycling is also made part of everyday school life, with specialised bins for clothing, specific plastic bottles and electronic waste helping students, families and staff contribute more easily to waste reduction.
Connecting Environmental Action with Community Impact
Environmental responsibility is also strengthened through community based projects. Nexus International School Malaysia organised a beach clean up in Port Dickson to combat marine pollution and raise awareness of plastic waste. Students collected litter, identified and weighed the waste, and shared their findings with the Ocean Conservancy to support broader environmental protection efforts.
At Australian International School Malaysia, Eco Day focused on students’ role in caring for the world through sustainability projects, upcycling art and green initiatives. The school’s Living Campus team brings together students and teachers to enrich the culture of sustainability within the community. AISM has also been recognised through the Eco Schools programme, earning a Bronze Award for its commitment to sustainability.
More recently, AISM’s Sustainability Heroes Walkathon encouraged students to create costumes using recycled and reusable materials, combining creativity, community spirit and environmental awareness in a meaningful school wide experience.
